4×4 or 6×6?

A 4×4 Sudoku has 16 cells in four 2×2 boxes, and half of them are already filled in. If a child can count to four, they can solve it – usually from about age five with a little help.

A 6×6 Sudoku has 36 cells in boxes of two rows by three columns, with 16 given. It's the natural next step, from about first or second grade, before moving on to the full 9×9.

How to explain the rules

Every row, every column and every box with a thick border holds each number exactly once. That's all. Solve the first puzzle together: point to a row with only one number missing and ask which one it must be.

Guessing is never needed. Every puzzle here is checked for exactly one solution when it's generated – and the answers are on the last page in case anyone wants to check.

For preschool, school and home

Four puzzles per page make a good worksheet; one per page suits the youngest or solving together on the board. The sheets are free to copy and hand out at preschool, school or clubs.
